GEO vs AEO vs SEO for Hotels: What Changes, What Doesn't

Hoteliers are being sold three acronyms at once. This guide explains what SEO, GEO and AEO each mean in practice, why they are mostly the same work, and the few places where they genuinely differ.

The three in one breath

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is making your pages rank in a traditional search results page — the list of links Google has shown for twenty-five years.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is making your content the source an engine quotes when it answers a question directly, whether that is a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, or a voice assistant reading one answer aloud.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is making your hotel the one a generative model recommends when a traveller asks it for a shortlist — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and the assistants built into booking apps.

What doesn't change

Most of the work is shared. All three reward:

  • Clear, specific, human-written content that answers real questions. A page titled "Monthly stays in Tel Aviv: rates, wifi speed and what's included" works for all three. A page titled "Welcome" works for none.
  • Consistent facts about your property everywhere online: your site, Google Business Profile, OTAs, press. Search engines and language models both check.
  • Authority: mentions and links from sources the engines trust. Press, guest blogs, review platforms and industry publications.
  • Technical hygiene: fast pages, clean structure, schema markup that tells machines what your pages are about.

If you have been doing SEO well, you are most of the way to GEO and AEO already.

What does change

Format. Answer engines quote short, self-contained passages. A 40-word paragraph that fully answers "do you have a kitchen in every room?" is more valuable than a 400-word page that mentions kitchens somewhere. Write the answer first, then the detail.

Entity consistency. Generative models reason about your hotel as an entity with attributes. If your site says "Hotel Aurora", Google says "Aurora Boutique Hotel" and Booking.com says "Hotel Aurora Tel Aviv", the model may treat them as three places or trust none. One name, one address, one amenity list, everywhere.

Citations over clicks. In SEO, a mention without a link is a missed opportunity. In GEO, a mention is the point: models learn from text, and an unlinked mention in a respected travel title still makes you more recommendable.

Measurement. Rankings are easy to track. AI recommendations are not, yet. We monitor a fixed set of guest questions across the major assistants monthly and report how often you appear and which sources are cited.

Which to invest in first

For a hotel at $200 a night and above, the honest order is: fix your entity consistency this week (it is free), keep building SEO content and PR (it feeds everything), and format new content answer-first so it earns AEO and GEO placement without extra work. Treat GEO monitoring as a reporting line, not a separate project.

That is how our packages are built: SEO and PR at the core, with AI search included from the Growth package up.
